Zeaxanthin And Vision Print E-mail
A recent research study shows that zeaxanthin supplementation may be as effective as lutein in affecting vision.  Researchers at the Veterans Hospital in North Chicago, Illinois, conducted a clinical trial of 60 older patients with mild to moderate macular degeneration. Patients in one group received zeaxanthin, another group received zeaxanthin and lutein and the third group received lutein only. 8 mg of zeaxanthin and 9 mg of lutein were used. Patients were tested for vision and visual fields. Using a visual test designed to identify early signs of AMD, the researchers found that the vision in the zeaxanthin group sharpened and that a larger percentage of patients experienced clearing of their scotomas (these are "blind spots" near or at the central vision).

When the patient's macular pigment was measured, it was found that both lutein and zeaxanthin increased..  The density of the macular pigment is very important; denser pigment is found in healthier eyes.

Remember that this is a small study and was performed on those with early AMD.  More research is needed and is underway.
