Radiation Therapy - Recruiting Print E-mail
Share Share Enrollment is underway for a clinical trial for the treatment of wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The trial is sponsored by Theragenics Corporation® and will investigate the safety and ability of using the TheraSightTM Ocular Brachytherapy System to treat wet AMD.  In this condition, abnormal new blood vessels form beneath the retina and leak fluid that damages the macula, affecting the central, and normally sharpest, area of vision. The formation and growth of these vessels is associated with the progressive visual loss that occurs in wet AMD.

With the TheraSightTM Ocular Brachytherapy System, a radioactive button mounted on an applicator wand is positioned behind the eye and held in place touching the outer surface (‘white’) of the eye for 5 to 20 minutes. The radioactive button produces low-energy x-rays that interfere with the abnormal new blood vessels, potentially reducing further vision loss. The TheraSightTM Ocular Brachytherapy System involves a one-time treatment (the radiation is administered only once).

The study will take place at 6 clinical sites and will compare 3 different dosages or amounts of radiation, so all participants will receive treatment. Contact Theragenics Corporation® (1-877-960-1234) for further information on trial centers and eligibility criteria.  Click here for more information.
